THE ADDRESS OF THE DISTRICT GRAND MASTER.
Most Worshipful Brother, Right Worshipful Brethren, Distinguished Brethren,
Dear Brethren and Friends all,
I would like to welcome you all to this our first proper Assembly of the District Grand Lodge of Spain since the pandemic although we did of course hold a special meeting when we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Mark Masonry in Spain last May. It feels so good to be able to return to our normal calendar and gather together once more in person.
As always, my special thanks go to those of you who have travelled great distances from other parts of Spain, including the Islands, and also from the UK and Europe for the extra effort and time you have given to attend this event. I really hope you have all enjoyed today and that you feel your journey has been worthwhile.
I would like to make mention that we have a special guest today in the form of M.W.Bro. Dominique Paquet who is the Grand Master of Mark Master Masons in France. Welcome MW Bro Dominique.
Today has seen a major change to my executive team with the resignation of W. Bro Neville Jarrett. Neville has been the Chaplain of the District of Mark Master Masons in Spain for as long as I have held my office. Throughout that time, he has offered me his unconditional support and friendship and I would like to extend my thanks to him for all the work he has undertaken both for me and on behalf of the District. I hope Neville that you will continue to play an active role in District Mark for many years to come and that you will enjoy your retirement.
As always, the Annual Assembly has been a busy and exciting day, even more so for those of you that have been re-appointed, promoted or invested with first appointments. Many congratulations to you all, your recognition is well deserved. These honours are awarded for your past service to your Lodges and the District; they are not automatic and I expect you all to continue to support both your Lodges and the District. I am truly looking forward to working with you all and I hope that you enjoy your year.
Congratulations are also due to W.Bro. Bill Russell and W.Bro. Jeff Hyde who were honoured with their first Grand Rank in June last year.
I always feel that the sight of the Royal Ark Mariner Worshipful Commanders and their Wardens making their entrance into the Assembly provide added pomp and ceremony to an occasion like today and I urge those of you who are not members of The Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners to seriously consider joining. It is always moored to a Mark Lodge to confirm the close connections between the two Orders. Two Brethren were rewarded with Royal Ark Mariner Grand Rank last December, W. Bro Txema Oleaga and W. Bro Ian Crawford, very many congratulations to you both.
It was a privilege at long last to be able present the Long Service Certificates in person and I would like to congratulate all of you for achieving such milestones.
The District Secretary is busy working on next year’s plan for Official Visits and there are plans to visit A Coruña, Galicia in February, the Canary Islands in March and Mallorca in April. With all this activity as you might have guessed the membership numbers have increased, in fact to the tune of 42 over the past year which is very pleasing with the majority being Spanish speaking brethren. However, we cannot rest on our laurels, and it is up to each and every one of us to actively encourage Brethren to join us in both Mark and RAM.
Brethren, these meetings don’t just happen; a lot of hard work goes into the organisation so I extend my personal thanks to the District Grand Secretary, Chris Langley for his splendid efforts in organising today and his impressive efforts in producing a regular and informative newsletter throughout the year, he is ably supported by the members of the secretariat and others too numerous to mention by name but they know who they are. My thanks also go to our Director of Ceremonies, David Wynn and his team for their exemplary performance today. It was his first time as Director of Ceremonies for the District meeting and he has done well.
I would also like to thank the District Grand Treasurer Michael Shilan for his hard work in keeping the financial aspects of the District on the straight and narrow and yet again for the many hours he has spent in the bank sorting out our affairs. Michael´s workload was complicated when we decided to open Wise accounts which enables us to deal in Euro and Sterling without the hefty transfer charges that we had been suffering from with conventional banking accounts since the advent of Brexit.
Brethren, we have had a busy and I hope interesting weekend. We have had this meeting today and will shortly move onto our festive board. Yesterday we met at an informal reception to renew or make new acquaintances and we are also grateful to have Bro Mark Smith, a fellow Mark Mason, who we are more used to seeing on the antiques programmes on the TV giving us a really interesting talk on The Battle of Trafalgar.
Whilst we have been busy, many of our relatives and friends have taken the opportunity to join the coach trip that has been organised and they have been to the Turron Museum which would have been followed by time to browse in the factory shop, tasting the produce and having the opportunity to purchase any favourites, followed by lunch. Hopefully they are having a great day and if we are lucky, they may even bring us a treat.
Brethren, I hope you have all had an enjoyable weekend and for those of you returning home today a safe and pleasant journey and may the Great Overseer of the Universe bless and keep you well till we all meet again.
Finally, I thank you all for your enthusiastic welcome for myself and my Executive and most of all for your unstinting support of this fantastic Order; it was a wonderful year and let us make 2023 even better. Please all enjoy your Mark Masonry for, as we say, “Among Mark Master Masons you will ever find friends”.

EL DISCURSO DEL GRAN MAESTRO DEL DISTRITO.
Muy Respectable Hermano, Muy Venerables Hermanos, Distinguidos Hermanos,
Queridos Hermanos y Amigos todos,
Me gustaría darles la bienvenida a nuestra primera Asamblea propiamente dicha de la Gran Logia de Distrito de España desde la pandemia, aunque, por supuesto, celebramos una reunión especial cuando celebramos el 25 aniversario de la Marca en España en mayo pasado. Da gusto poder volver a nuestro calendario normal y reunirnos una vez más en persona.
Como siempre, mi agradecimiento especial a aquellos de ustedes que han viajado grandes distancias desde otras partes de España, incluidas las Islas, y también desde el Reino Unido y Europa por el esfuerzo y el tiempo extra que han dedicado para asistir a este evento. Realmente espero que todos hayan disfrutado hoy y que sientan que su viaje ha valido la pena.
Me gustaría mencionar que hoy tenemos un invitado especial en la forma de MRH. Dominique Paquet, quien es el Gran Maestro de los Masones de la Marca de Francia. Bienvenido MRH Dominique.
Hoy se ha producido un cambio importante en mi equipo ejecutivo con la renuncia de VH Neville Jarrett. Neville ha sido Capellán del Distrito de los Masones de la Marca en España durante el tiempo que ocupé mi cargo. A lo largo de ese tiempo me ha brindado su apoyo incondicional y su amistad y me gustaría extender mi agradecimiento a él por todo el trabajo que ha realizado tanto para mí como en nombre del Distrito. Espero, Neville, que sigas desempeñando un papel activo en el Distrito de la Marca durante muchos años y que disfrutes de tu jubilación.
Como siempre, la Asamblea Anual ha sido un día ajetreado y emocionante, más aún para aquellos de ustedes que han sido reelegidos, promovidos o investidos con primeros nombramientos. Muchas felicidades a todos ustedes, su reconocimiento es bien merecido. Estos honores se otorgan por su servicio pasado a sus Logias y al Distrito; no son automáticos y espero que todos ustedes continúen apoyando tanto a sus Logias como al Distrito. Tengo muchas ganas de trabajar con todos ustedes y espero que disfruten su año.
Felicitaciones también se deben a VH Bill Russell y VH Jeff Hyde, quienes fueron honrados con su primer Gran Rango en junio del año pasado.
Siempre me agrada que la vista de los Venerables Comandantes de Nautas del Arca Real y sus Vigilantes, haciendo su entrada en la Asamblea, agrega solemnidad y ceremonial a una ocasión como la de hoy e insto a aquellos de ustedes que no son miembros de la Antigua y Honorable Fraternidad de los Nautas del Arca Real a considerar seriamente unirse. El Arca Real, siempre está unida a una logia de la Marca para confirmar las estrechas conexiones entre los dos.
Dos Hermanos fueron recompensados con el Gran Rango de los Nautas del Arca Real en diciembre pasado, VH Txema Oleaga y VH Ian Crawford, muchas felicidades a ambos.
Fue un privilegio por fin poder presentar los Certificados de servicio prolongado en persona y me gustaría felicitarlos a todos por lograr tales hitos.
La Secretaria del Distrito está trabajando en el plan de Visitas Oficiales del próximo año y está previsto visitar Coruña, Galicia en febrero, Canarias en marzo y Mallorca en abril. Con toda esta actividad, como habrán adivinado, el número de miembros ha aumentado, de hecho, a 42 durante el año pasado, lo cual es muy agradable, ya que la mayoría son hermanos de habla hispana. Sin embargo, no podemos dormirnos en los laureles y depende de todos y cada uno de nosotros animar activamente a los Hermanos a unirse a nosotros tanto en la Marca como en los Nautas.
Hermanos, estas reuniones no suceden ocasionalmente; se requiere mucho trabajo duro de organización, por lo que extiendo mi agradecimiento personal al Gran Secretario del Distrito, Chris Langley, por sus espléndidos esfuerzos en la organización de hoy y sus impresionantes esfuerzos en la producción de un boletín informativo periódico (Newsletter) durante todo el año apoyados por los miembros de la secretaría y otros hermanos demasiado numerosos para nombrarlos pero que saben quiénes son.
Mi agradecimiento también va para nuestro Director de Ceremonias, David Wynn y su equipo por su desempeño ejemplar hoy. Era su primera vez como Director de Ceremonias de la reunión del Distrito y lo ha hecho bien. También me gustaría agradecer al Gran Tesorero del Distrito, Michael Shilan, por su arduo trabajo para mantener los aspectos financieros del Distrito por buen camino y, una vez más, por las muchas horas que ha pasado en el banco resolviendo nuestros asuntos. La carga de trabajo de Michael se complicó cuando decidimos abrir cuentas “Wise” lo que nos permite negociar en euros y libras esterlinas sin los altos cargos por transferencia que sufrimos con las cuentas bancarias convencionales desde la llegada del Brexit.
Hermanos, hemos tenido un fin de semana ocupado y espero que interesante. Hemos tenido esta reunión hoy y pronto pasaremos a nuestro ágape festivo. Ayer nos reunimos en una recepción informal para renovar o hacer nuevos conocidos y también estamos agradecidos de tener al hermano Mark Smith, un compañero de la Marca, a quien estamos más acostumbrados a ver en los programas de antigüedades en la televisión, dándonos una charla muy interesante sobre La Batalla de Trafalgar.
Mientras hemos estado ocupados, muchos de nuestros familiares y amigos han aprovechado para sumarse al viaje en autocar que se ha organizado y han ido al Museo del Turrón al que habría seguido un tiempo para curiosear en la tienda de la fábrica, degustando el producto y tener la oportunidad de comprar uno de los favoritos, seguido del almuerzo. Esperemos que estén teniendo un gran día y, si tenemos suerte, incluso nos traigan una golosina.
Hermanos, espero que todos hayan tenido un fin de semana agradable y para aquellos de ustedes que regresan a casa hoy un viaje seguro y placentero y que el Gran Supervisor del Universo los bendiga y los mantenga bien hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar.
Finalmente, les agradezco a todos por su entusiasta acogida hacia mí y mi Ejecutivo y, sobre todo, por su incansable apoyo a esta fantástica Orden; fue un año maravilloso y hagamos que el 2023 sea aún mejor. Por favor, todos disfruten de su masonería de la Marca porque, como decimos entre nosotros, “Entre los masones de la Marca siempre encontrarán amigos“.
