Mark Masonry is a branch of Freemasonry that focuses on the symbolism of the Mark Degree, which highlights themes of diligence, honesty, and integrity. It builds on the teachings of Craft Masonry and is open to Master Masons. The ceremonies often centre around the story of the building of King Solomon’s Temple, emphasising the value of every individual’s contribution.

Membership in Mark Masonry is open to Master Masons who belong to a recognised Craft Lodge. Candidates must also be in good standing within their Craft Lodge and express a desire to further explore Masonic teachings through the Mark Degree.

The ‘Mark’ refers to the personal mark that ancient stonemasons would carve into their work to identify it. Symbolically, in Mark Masonry, it represents an individual’s unique contributions and the importance of personal responsibility and recognition.

Mark Masonry is governed by the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales and its Districts and Lodges Overseas. Lodges meet regularly to confer degrees, conduct business, and foster fellowship among members.

Mark Masonry is considered a progressive order that complements Craft Masonry. While Craft Masonry teaches foundational principles, the Mark Degree adds further depth by focusing on the allegory of the keystone, teamwork, and the moral lessons derived from the operative craft.

The Royal Ark Mariner (RAM) Degree is an additional degree within Mark Masonry. It draws on the story of Noah and the Ark, teaching lessons about faith, obedience, and perseverance. It is often seen as a companion to the Mark Degree.

Yes, membership in the Royal Ark Mariner Degree requires candidates to be a Mark Mason in good standing. The RAM Degree is conferred in Lodges of Royal Ark Mariners, which are usually attached to Mark Lodges.

The RAM Degree offers members a chance to explore deeper spiritual and moral lessons through the allegory of Noah’s Ark. It emphasises themes of survival, unity, and the importance of trust in divine guidance.

The Royal Ark Mariner Degree is overseen by the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons in the UK, with each RAM Lodge attached to a specific Mark Lodge. This structure ensures a close relationship between the two degrees.

The story of Noah and the Ark is central to the RAM Degree. It symbolises the challenges of life, the importance of faith during adversity, and the ultimate reward of steadfastness and trust in higher principles.
